The Printer Calibration XTension allows you to edit current calibration settings. Be sure you have a densitometer (reflection for paper output or transmission for film) and a copy of the document “Calibration Test,” included with this XTension, before you begin.
To Edit current settings:
1. Output the document “Calibration Test.”

2. Take densitometer readings from the test patches contained in this document. You will use these readings to edit the calibration settings.
3. Choose Printer Calibration... from the Utilities menu to open the Printer Calibration dialogue box.

4. Click the appropriate Printer Type in the list.
5. Click Edit to open the Calibration dialogue box.The settings in this box will calibrate the printer to allow for what really happens when you print. Low frequency values are on the left side of the window; high frequency values are on the right side.

6. Use the Format pop-up list to examine the Density and Coverage values:
Density values pop-up will give you density/coverage ratios. The Density axis represents the logarithm of the exposure. The Coverage axis represents what percentage of the dot is produced.
Coverage values pop-up will give you output/input ratios — the percentage you asked for (x-axis) versus what percentage the printer should produce (y-axis).

7. Adjust the calibration settings by entering the densitometer reading results from the test patches you got when you ran the test:
• Enter any changes into the Low Freq and High Freq boxes by typing in the values you want. QuarkXPress will interpolate the corrections required for lines per inch between these low and high frequency ranges:
Low Freq values must be from 15-59 lines per inch
High Freq values must be from 21-400 lines per inch
• Adjust the curves on the graphs by clicking and holding down the mouse button over one of the plot points. As you move the point vertically along the grid, the cursor turns into a pointer and the results will appear in the lower right hand corner, indicating what the density value or coverage percentage value is. Release the mouse button when you have the value you want.

NOTE: Use the No Gain button to reset the calibration curve (input will be equal to output).
8. Press Save to save the new settings or Cancel to keep the original ones.
NOTE: If you edited a setting, an asterisk ( * ) appears next to the printer name in the Printer Calibration dialogue box. Press Reset to return to the original settings and the asterisk will be removed.
